I was unable to participate in this year’s sculpture symposium at the Viles arboretum, as I have in past years.

I am pleased to read of its success:

Turning stone

June 29, 2016

Being a sculptor comes with challenges that you might not expect.  Sometimes, one acts as a toolsmith.

The lathe and the drill press are tools that are associated with work in wood and metal.

Recently, I worked on a cylindrical project in stone, and had to adapt machine tools.

Here are some sights and sounds.

Artist in residence at UMaine

May 17, 2016

In April of 2016, I spent a week as an artist in residence at the University of Maine in Orono.

I always enjoy interacting with students and staff.

I’ll finish the sculpture at my studio in the next few months, after which it will be installed in Orono when the site preparations are complete. An article in UMaine Today describes my visit.

Celebrating Wyoming Evocations Masts

June 17, 2013

On June 1, 2013 the Maine Maritime Museum celebrated the second phase of our Wyoming Evocation by hoisting special flags up the masts. Since then, the masts have been illuminated, creating a new experience in the evening.

The design is a life-size evocation of the schooner Wyoming, the largest wooden sailing ship ever built in the United States.  Due to the ambitious scale and funding limitations, it was constructed in two phases.

It’s great to see our vision develop.
